A Lewis gunner of the Royal Garrison Artillery with his weapon on a cartwheel mount for antiaircraft defence, France, March 1918. Note that despite the mount, the gun is not fitted with anti-aircraft sights. (© IWM Q 10749)

A US Marine training with a Lewis gun, giving a good view of the ‘Light Folding Field Mount’, soon superseded by the lighter bipod. The pose with the Lewis gun and mount is very similar to that used for the ‘Go over the top with U.S. Marines’ recruiting poster. (Tom Laemlein/Armor Plate Press)

Like any small unit, Harry’s Lewis gun section became a tightly knit group: ‘There were five in a machine gun team ... these boys were with you night and day, you shared everything with them. We each knew where the others came from, what their lives had been and where they were ... It’s a difficult thing to describe, the comradeship between us’ (quoted in Arthur 2005: 122–23).
